This Ooni Volt 12 review covers build quality, real-world performance, and whether it is worth the money.
The Ooni Volt 12 is Ooni’s electric pizza oven – the first in their range that doesn’t require gas or wood, and the only one designed specifically for indoor use. It reaches 450°C and produces results almost identical to the gas Koda 12. Here’s whether it’s worth the premium price.
Verdict
The Volt 12 is the right pizza oven for anyone who can’t use gas outdoors (flat, balcony, or indoor use) or who wants the simplicity of plugging in without gas cylinders. The performance is excellent, the control is better than gas, and it’s genuinely convenient to use indoors. The main compromise is the price, which is significantly higher than the gas Koda 12 for effectively the same cooking capacity.

What Makes the Volt Different
Dual Heating Elements
Unlike gas or wood ovens where heat comes primarily from above (flame at the back) and conducts into the stone, the Volt has independent heating elements above and below the stone. You can control the top and bottom heat separately, which gives you control over the balance between base crispiness and top browning that you don’t have in a flame-based oven.
For Neapolitan pizza, running the bottom element at maximum and the top at around 80-90% produces results very close to a gas oven. For thicker-crust pizza, dialling back the bottom and prioritising the top gives a better result without burning the base.
Indoor Capable
This is the Volt’s key differentiator. It’s designed to be used on a kitchen worktop with adequate ventilation. There are no flames, no gas cylinders, and no need for outdoor space. For flat dwellers or people who want to make pizza year-round regardless of weather, this is genuinely significant.
It does produce some smoke from toppings and flour at high temperatures, so reasonable kitchen ventilation is still needed – an extractor hood on high works well.
Temperature Control
Electric heating elements maintain a set temperature precisely. There’s no need to manage a flame or fire; you set the dial to your target temperature and the oven holds it. This makes the Volt more consistent and easier to use than gas ovens, particularly for beginners.
Performance
At 450°C (its maximum), the Volt cooks Neapolitan pizza in 90-120 seconds. This is slightly longer than gas at 480°C+ but the results are nearly identical – proper blistering, leopard spots on the crust, and an excellent base. The 50°C temperature difference between the Volt and a full-temperature gas oven is not meaningfully detectable in the final pizza.
Stone recovery between pizzas is better than the Koda 12 because the element can immediately compensate for the temperature drop caused by the cold dough. In practice, this means you can cook pizzas in quicker succession than with a gas oven that relies on passive stone heat recovery.
Limitations
- Price: Significantly more expensive than the Koda 12 for the same cooking capacity
- 12-inch maximum: Same limitation as the Koda 12
- Power requirement: 1600W on a standard 13A circuit is fine in the UK, but check before using on extension leads or older wiring
- No wood flavour: Electric cannot replicate the subtle smoke character of wood or charcoal cooking
Who Is It For?
The Volt is specifically right for: flat dwellers without outdoor space, people who want to cook pizza indoors year-round, those who find gas cylinder management inconvenient, and anyone who values precise temperature control over fuel flexibility.
If you have outdoor space and no restrictions on gas use, the Ooni Koda 12 delivers near-identical results for considerably less money. But for its target use case, the Volt is genuinely excellent.
Overall Rating: 8.5/10
The Volt solves a real problem – high-quality pizza oven performance without needing a garden. The dual element control and indoor capability justify the premium for the right buyer. For most people with outdoor access, the gas alternatives offer better value, but the Volt occupies a unique position in the market that no other oven currently fills.
